Industry Talk
Tues 4th May

The Talk:
Join Oxford University Engineering Society on 4th May for an exciting talk + Q&A by Luisa Freitas dos Santos from GSK.

Luisa will be speaking about her experiences, both in founding a startup, and in working for a major international engineering company. She has experience in managing R&D teams from across the world, including work on developing the world’s main type of asthma inhaler.

The Talk:

From 201 to Tideway: Reflections on 40 years in Civil Engineering
Imperial Civil Engineering Alumnus and Tideway Chief Technical Officer Roger Bailey will give a summary of some key and hopefully interesting aspects of his career in Civil Engineering since his graduation in 1981.
He will go on to give some insights into the challenges of the planning, design and delivery of the £4 Billion Thames Tideway Tunnel “Super Sewer” project through London as it moves towards the 70% complete mark ahead of becoming fully operational in 2025.
There will be plenty of time for interaction, debate and questions.



Industry Talk

The Talk:Harbinder Singh Birdi, Partner at Hawkins\Brown Architects will be describing how architecture and design practices have responded to the Covid pandemic by the way in which they collaborate and how they are making use of use of new software and technology to address the challenges faced by the construction industry, from modern methods of construction to achieving Carbon zero targets .
Harbinder will also be describing what skills graduates will need to succeed in practice, as well as the opportunities that exist in the industry both in the UK and internationally.
The Speaker:Harbinder is considered an industry expert in major engineering-led civic projects. As Senior Partner, he heads the Hawkins\Brown Infrastructure and Transport team, providing design leadership on all projects within the sector. H
He is a chartered architect and a member of the previous Architects’ Journal 40 under 40 list. He holds numerous fellowships including the Royal Institute of British Architects for his on-going mentorship of new talent in architecture, and the Institution of Civil Engineers for his expertise in the design and delivery of major infrastructure projects.

The Event:IEA's launch event attracted over 300 sign-ups for a fun night of quizzes and networking with engineering peers from around the world. Students wore their most festive attire and brought their A-game as bragging rights were up for grabs!

The Talks:
To celebrate Engineering Week 2021, the TCD Eng Soc bring to you 'Your Future in Industry' series of talks from Trinity's past Alumni. Learn what inspired them to choose their field of engineering and what opportunities one can find within the field.
Starting at 7pm Tuesday the 2nd of March, Eoin Brate (AB Forensics) and David Nolan (Postdoctoral research at TCD) discuss the fields of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering.
To brush away the mid-week blues, 7pm Wednesday the 3rd of March, Darragh Noble(Waterman Moylan) and Christy O'Sullivan (RPS Group), bring you the excitements in Structural and Civil Engineering. Saving the best for last, 7pm Thursday the 4th of March, Emma Spillane(02 telefonica) and Maurice Gavin(TOOTHPIC), talk Computer and Electrical Engineering.

The Panel Event:Imperial's CGCU annual Diversity in Engineering panel event, now hosted online, brings students, industry professionals and engineers from all walks of life together for an open discussion on working experiences and diversity in the workplace.

The Attendees:This year, they are welcoming BAE Systems, Thought Machine, Arrival, Two Sigma, VMware, Showcode and Graphcore to our panel. This is a great opportunity for students to be a part of the conversation and to network with engineers in industry, finding out about their stories, professional experiences and how their workplaces are championing inclusivity.
